The Sports Business Opportunity
The global sports sector is estimated to be worth nearly $700 billion USD making it one of the world's largest industries in terms of revenues and employment. In India, the business of sport has grown extensively and is now a $3.5 billion USD industry. The country has been host to international mega-events such as the Commonwealth Games, ICC World Cup, FIFA U-17 World Cup and Hockey World Cup which has positioned India as a sporting destination in addition to generating global awareness around Indian athletes and investment opportunities within Indian sport.
More importantly though, over the past decade India has moved from being a single sport nation to a multi-sport country and is witnessing an unprecedented boom that has completely transformed the Indian sports landscape. The recent launch of new initiatives such the Indian Super League, Hockey India League, Indian Badminton League, Pro Kabaddi League and Ultimate Table Tennis League are changing the face of Indian sports and creating a number of employment opportunities across the sector.
The rapid expansion of the Indian sports landscape has created a demand for quality sports management professionals to fill available positions and build the case for new roles to be established. The days when sports organizations were primarily looking to hire someone who only played sports at a high level are in the past, what is now required are qualified professionals that have an understanding of the business of sport and are able to combine their knowledge with their passion in order to contribute to the industry's long-term growth.
Sports Management is a broad field that includes all functions connected to the organization, marketing, management and evaluation of sports properties, products and services. Sports Management professionals work in various roles to drive the development and commercialization of sports organizations and athletes across all levels of society - in essence they are the 'behind the scenes heroes' building and bringing sport to the masses.
